Are You Feeling Free?I hope everyone had a wonderful Fourth of July holiday. As I reflected on the idea of freedom this weekend, I found myself asking what freedom really means on a personal level. Not the freedom of speech, the right to bear arms, or the right to plead the fifth. The freedom to simply be our authentic selves. I wonder how free we really are when we are: tethered to our phones or other devices. trapped by comparison. afraid to disappoint others. overwhelmed by expectations. pretending everything is fine when, inside, we're struggling.
I especially worry about young people growing up in a world where constant comparison and digital connection have become the norm. Despite being more connected than ever, so many feel profoundly alone. That isn't freedom. At The Goldfinch Foundation, we believe one of the greatest gifts we can offer another person is the freedom to be authentically themselves. The freedom to know they belong. The freedom to ask for help without shame. The freedom to laugh, create, move, disconnect from technology, and connect with others without fear of judgment. Research consistently shows that meaningful relationships are among the strongest predictors of health, happiness, and longevity. We are not meant to navigate life alone. This month, I challenge all of us to help someone feel a little more free to be themselves. Create a space free from judgment, where vulnerability is met with acceptance, compassion, and love. Sometimes showing someone they are loved is more powerful than simply telling them. Put the phone down. Ask a deeper question. Listen without trying to fix. Have the courage to share your own struggles, too. Perhaps the greatest gift we can give another person, is the freedom to simply be themselves—fully known, accepted, and loved.
